Embassy’s and other such odd places

Walking along Greenlane road, the Chinese consulate stands like a granite icon; a slightly intimidating fortress. Outside protestors sit on the pavement, bright Falun Gong banners proudly stuck up against the fence. We’re after the visa section – not here were told by one protestor. Ironically he then kindly explains to me how to get to the visa building, some blocks down the road – It’s not often a person protesting a countries action, then helps to actively promote it within the same 5 minute period. Very helpful though!
We got a number from the little ticket machine. Yay 212 – not far to go. Reminds me of queuing for visas in Singapore with all the interesting people for all walks of life having massive arguments (and often tears) over passport problems. I’m hoping that won’t be us.
I’ve always learnt when applying for visas – more documents are typically better; ‘the ones that ask for’ in the visa instructions. ITs like baking a cake, although smart people sometimes miss steps. Arguing with a person behind a glass counter about what you need to provide will never advance you towards getting your visa. It only makes it worse! The small chinese gentleman (who was very helpful truth be told) cannot change years of diplomatic rules of China, not a chance.
After a few days, a big swipe of a credit card! – Success – one visa down – a few to go.
