It was sooo hot the following day, blue skies in the middle of the hot season. We visited and admired the architecture at the buddist Wat Ounalom Temple, it was so peaceful and quiet, and the tropical garden combined with the colourful buildings was beautiful. We then headed to the Museum of Angkor history. Its red buildings were very elegant. Two blocks away, we visited the Royal Palace where I proudly donned some hired baggy pants to cover my legs – the one day I decided to wear my short shorts in the past week and I had to cover up! The palace architecture was simple and attractive, and made wandering around the grounds quite pleasant, except for the heat! Unfortunately there was a power cut just before we saw the throne room, so we didn’t quite see the degree detail of the ceiling paintings and around the throne that we wanted to. The Silver Pagoda, a temple inside the grounds, was ok but not spectacular, it’s named as such because the floor is made of 502 silver tiles, although apparently a lot were stolen by the Khmer Rouge.
Walking home along the river front, we saw quite a few young guys training to be monks with their bright orange cloth wrapped around them – nice and bright!
